Calculus, MET2 2023 VCAA 11 MC

Two functions, \(f\) and \(g\), are continuous and differentiable for all  \(x\in R\). It is given that  \(f(-2)=-7,\ g(-2)=8\)  and  \(f^{′}(-2)=3,\ g^{′}(-2)=2\).

The gradient of the graph  \(y=f(x)\times g(x)\)  at the point where  \(x=-2\)  is

  1. \(-10\)
  2. \(-6\)
  3. \(0\)
  4. \(6\)
  5. \(10\)

\(E\)

Show Worked Solution

\(\text{Using the Product Rule when}\ \ x=-2:\)

\(\dfrac{d}{dx}(f(x)\times g(x))\) \(=f(x)g^{′}(x)+g(x)f^{′}(x)\)
  \(=f(-2)g^{′}(-2)+g(-2)f^{′}(-2)\)
  \(=-7\times 2+8\times 3\)
  \(=10\)

\(\Rightarrow E\)

`13/3`

Show Worked Solution

`f(x) = xsqrt(2x + 1)`

`f′(x)` `=1 sqrt(2x + 1) + x xx 1/2 xx 2(2x+1)^(- 1/2)`
  `=sqrt(2x + 1) + x(2x+1)^(- 1/2)`
`f′(4)` `= sqrt9 + 4(9)^(- 1/2)`
  `=3 + 4/3`
  `=13/3`
