Basic principle:

  • Control technologies involve a signal input from the car/driver to a processor which provides an output or action to be taken.

Technology examples:

  • Cameras monitoring the position of a car in the lane. If the car exits the lane, the processor detects this and outputs an alarm to the driver.
  • Semi-autonomous driving. The car can activate brakes without driver intervention if a collision/obstacle is detected.
  • Cruise control. A speed is given as an input and a fuel rate is given to the engine to maintain this speed.
  • PID control. Like cruise control, this uses input from LIDAR sensors and cameras to detect obstacles and other cars, to slow down if necessary.
